Finished Facebook. Very interesting. Different options of sending a message, and/or adding as a friend. I used both options. Because of privacy issues the code keep coming up, you need an eye doctor after, but then your message gets sent. Interactive with AOL instant messenger.

Maneuvered around face book, and realized the capabilities of linking the addressees with Outlook. Will see later if I can pull up a couple the other way.

Figured out the problem with face book and unsupported e mail. I can't upload e mail addresses from Outlook because my home computer doesn't have it. I have opened my web mail version but that doesn't work either. I'll look at the other postings and see if any else had any trouble.

RSS Feeds

I used Google Reader: www.google.com/reader. It was much easier than the others bloglines and newsgator, in my opinion. Because I am using blogger.com I am already logged in to my Google e mail account, and I just picked the topic that I wanted: libraries. I subscribed to a news feed regarding Duke University Libraries and read some stories about them. For example:Rewarding excellence at the Libraries.

Podcast

OK Now I have listened to a podcast (which I didn't realize had to be downloaded through Apple i Tunes). I am listening to an Emory University Library podcast 10 best things to do to survive in a library.
Very interesting!

Wikis

Wikis are open to anyone to add or edit information about a specific topic. Take wikipedia for example. Now in technology you don’t have to know HTML codes to participate.I liked the Princeton Library wiki the best it was professional looking and gave relevant information.

OK, so I tried to go onto one of the podcast directories. Digg.com See message: podcast have left the building (at least on Digg)We've removed the dedicated Pod casts section on Digg. If you're curious why we did that, read our blog post. What next?

I found that this part was confusing. This was where individuals submitted their own software programs to download the podcast. Waiting to here the podcast from Emory University Library.

Web 2.0

I have finished my 23 things! (Hooray). I didn't realize when I started how intense it would be.
Many of the exercises were fun and interesting. Some were not - rollio,delicious-.
I learned things that I wasn't taught in library school ( a mere 5 years ago). Which also proves that the technology is changing minute by minute!
I used flcker and imported some pics into a PowerPoint presentation that I will be giving.
I though that the drop down box to measure your goals didn't correspond to the exercises that took up time as well as some technical glitches. Overall I enjoyed it and I feel I am part of the 21st century. Also I learned to blog which I have always wanted to do!
So thank you!

Facebook,You Tube,OverDrive

Facebook- As I started to play with it I wanted to do more things with it from the professional side. HOWEVER a message came up unsupported e mail address so I couldn't access my Broward County Public Library colleagues. I would imagine that it is blocked due to personal reasons. I can see that it will be an important tool to share ideas, and knowledge with colleagues.
The video was goofy but I did learn the importance of social networking.
You Tube- I typed in libraries and there was an interesting video from last week in which the CBS Evening News had a story aired last week about public libraries. It was a well done piece I thought. They covered the Los Angeles Public Library and interviewed some library users. Usage is up (no surprise) because of the economy paraphrasing :"people are not buying books or DVDs they are using the library for job searches librarians are acting as job counselors.
BUT of course the libraries are being impacted by loss of revenue, and most library will have to cut library hours.
You Tube will be an important information and marketing tool to show libraries own programs like the Birmingham Public Library (their own video for web2.0).

Overdrive: I didn't realize all of the features that Overdrive has. However licensing agreements have put a snag in it. For example i wanted to on my own free time download some popular books but I couldn't. The book was blocked burning or downloading to I pod. I guess the older books will be more lenient in terms of what can be used through their copyright and licensing agreements.

OK I am a little slow but finally figured it out. After watching the video and reading the article(4 times). I finally have logged in to my bloglines account and subscribed to an RSS Feed. Library related of course. The New York Times or NYT (books). In my understanding this is just a compression of getting the different newspapers in one full swoop as opposed to go into the different websites.
There is a Bloglines Top 1000 which lists the different websites like CNN,Dilbert etc.

I used Facebook,created the account however I kept getting the message couldn't support e mail address. I read the articles about facebook experiences. I thought that the academic library was interesting. YES all of these social networking sites can be useful as long as they are used in a professional manner. For example "post events such as tutorial sessions and involve students in discussions about library services. Another interesting use of Facebook is to observe groups pertaining to the library that students have created. It’s very interesting to read what they have to say."

Podcasts

Podcast- Tried to log on to one of the Podcast directories. Yahoo wasn't a relevant link, the other one I tried Podcast Alley and looked up libraries. The podcast was blocked due to Broward County's filter.
Thanks to I Tunes and I Pod I know about the podcast concept. It takes a while to download but once you do it is worth it. On the Diane Rehms sahow there are links to download and podcasts but I was wrong. I can't get the RSS feed to work.

I didn't see anything library related except for the the things that were in other exercises (which I didn't like). Yes it can be instructional but I think a lot of it is old entertainment. I choose what I did because I enjoyed watching them in terms of entertainment.

I have never been on You Tube before today. I can't believe the volume of content. For example: I enjoy watching The Mary Tyler Moore Show,The Carol Burnett Show and The Beatles. There were all there. Some content was never seen before.
Question who puts this on You Tube,copyright issues, and People must have a ton of spare time to watch this and add the content!

People must have absolute TONS of time to sit and create websites all day long. This website sounds like Zoho Writer. Same features. Except it has more features like: sharing and thus comparing the different versions. Will Microsoft be obsolete interesting question with these Internet based word processors.

I am not sure why there is such a thing? What are the advantages? I created the account and typed in a document. Yes I know it is another generation: web based technology. One day the Giant Microsoft won't be needed. For example companies and individuals paying for the software if all you need is an Internet connection then you are off and running. Interesting tool.

Some of the web sites that were listed, had dead links. I found the Nova link but it didn't work for me. What I took out of this exercise was it was another aspect of blogging and HTML.

I didn't like the You tube demo too confusing. The others that were in the format of Wikipedia I liked much better and could understand them better.

Library Thing

Library Thing was interesting in that you can blog about and see what people are reading. I didn't like it or think it was a necessary web page to add. To me it was like another blog.

web 2.0

Five Years ago when I graduated with my MLS, web 2.0 didn't exist. But as technology has changed so must libraries in order to be relevant.

I looked at the website: Geeks On Tour. Yes I did see the Posts about which tagged or as I like to say cross referenced the subject to the web. Once you select the link then it send you to the correct site!
I couldn't post a tag but I did see other participants blog sites and noticed how they posted their tags.

Rollyo

I created an account in Rollyo. my search was for Eric Clapton. You can see the results through this link. Again this seems like a bit of a cataloging tool collecting the different databases.

delicios.com exercise

Interesting to see how words are linked with tags. I couldn't open an account due to technical difficulties. However I did use the website: http://delicious.com/tag/
Tag Cloud: Popular. Popular subjects were listed. When I clicked on one for example Art it brought up blogs from people who created a Delic.ios account. The tags listed were words that were related to the the topic. I would call these synonyms. And of course they have hyperlinks underneath them. Every word follows a pattern to the next.

I have learned a lot about blogging. I have also experimented on my own with flikr. I have tried to use some flikr pictures and incorporate them into my Jewish genealogy presentation.
There certainly is huge amount of websites and tools that are being created every day!

Montager- Very interesting layout of millions of pictures. I entered van gough and a whole sea of pictures came on!. Some including the subject others not.

Exercise #6

Tried the links for Trader market but the links were disabled or didn't work. I typed in through google the Trader Market. I was able to use the map feature. http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/deck.php
I chose the colors that I wanted the map to look like. And what section of the world that I wanted to include on the map.
